SHADOW DOCTOR

Writer: Peter Calloway
Artist: Georges Jeanty

The series is based on Pete’s grandfather, a Black man named Nathaniel Calloway who, after graduating from medical school in the early 1930’s, was unable to find a job at a hospital due to his race. He was also unable to get a loan from a bank to start his own practice, again because of his race. Desperate, he turned to the only other source of money in Prohibition-era Chicago: the Mafia; run by none other than Al Capone. Think a medical Boardwalk Empire.
