Synopsis
Forty miles north of Baghdad, the thunderous propeller wash of a Blackhawk helicopter blows up dust and sand as a team of medics races across the tarmac of the largest medical hub in Iraq-Ballad Air Base and Level 3 Trauma Center. As the largest Level 3 Trauma center in Iraq, Ballad AB averages 10 emergency surgeries a day.
As injured soldiers and civilians are airlifted to Ballad AB and rushed into triage, critical cases are immediately taken into life and limb-saving surgery. Those less severely hurt are transferred to a nearby convalescent hospital, where Iraqi soldiers and civilians lay side-by-side with injured U.S. servicemen.
In this intense setting, we'll share the joys and sorrows of medical professionals working to save lives in one of the most dangerous locations in the world. We'll see the compromises, the camaraderie, and the compassion of those who serve in this isolated and dramatic environment. We'll learn why some people are drawn to this difficult duty - we'll understand their hardships, and value their rewards.
In an exclusive documentary presentation, Iraq; Frontline E.R. will take viewers to the rarely-seen world of a war zone hospital. We'll follow Ballad's medical team 24/7-responding to emergencies, making critical decisions, and improvising solutions to complex medical challenges in the midst of battle. It's Iraq: Frontline E.R. in a war zone.
